Bill was born in 1937 in Leona, Wisconsin, to Glen Samuel Dappen and Alma Marie Sorensen-Dappen and grew up in Bruce. He graduated from high school in 1956, having already shown his commitment to service by joining the National Guard as an accomplished trumpet player. That same year, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, embarking on a distinguished 20-year military career that he concluded with retirement in 1976. During his service, Bill worked as a professional photographer, capturing powerful moments during the Vietnam War and the close of the Korean War. From 1973 to 1976, he served as a Navy recruiter in Bemidji, inspiring countless young men and women to serve their country.
In 1960, Bill married Dianne, with whom he shared a remarkable journey marked by numerous relocations, deep friendships, and countless experiences as a military family.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Dianne, and their three children, Wendy (Shearer), Bill (wife Emmy), and Rich. His legacy of love and resilience lives on through his 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, all of whom he adored.
Known for his adventurous spirit, Bill was an avid fisherman, hunter, gardener, and photographer. He took great joy in piecing together puzzles and playing cards with a competitive spark, always bringing a sense of fun and challenge to each game.
Summing up Bill’s incredible life in a few paragraphs feels impossible. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and he will be profoundly missed.
