Terry Joe Hegna

Terry Joe Hegna, age 73, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 16th at his home, surrounded by loved ones.

The funeral will be held at the Hegna’s home (address below) on September 26th at 10:30am, followed by his burial at Greenwood Cemetery and a gathering at the Hegna’s afterwards.

Terry was born May 22nd, 1947 in Austin Minnesota. His life story isn’t your average tale as he dropped out of high school at the age of 14, hitchhiked across the US from Minnesota to California, working odd jobs for meals and money. He lied about his age and joined the Navy. He eventually made his way back across the country by hitchhiking and working odd jobs. He decided on the career of a carpet layer when his peers were still navigating high school, he would spend the next 50 years laying carpet. He met his wife Sheryl Caspers in Minneapolis at Joe’s Bar in 1968. Four years later they would marry and stay married until his death. They would go on to have five children and 15 grandchildren. Over the course of his life Terry was a true outdoorsman, an avid deer hunter, fisherman, and water skier. In his later years he spent his retirement playing with grandkids, playing bean bags, traveling the country by motorcycle, winters in Arizona and summers at Lake of the Woods.

He is preceded in death by his parents Maurice and Viola Hegna, his sister Darla Hegna, brothers Moon Hegna, Denny Hegna and Butch Hegna and by his son Terry Hegna.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years Sheryl Hegna, his sister Joy Butler (John), his children Shawna Swenson (Jeremy), Wes Hegna (Tessa), Mary Hegna (Chuck), Harlan Hegna (Tina). His grandchildren Chandler, Angel, Jordan, Maddie, Wyatt, Liv, Max, Harper, Aubree, Hudson, Harrison, Scarlett, Vivienne, Calvin and Dalton. And by numerous, nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews and friends.

Terry Hegna was a big supporter of Bemidji Lumberjack Football, he had three sons, a nephew and a grandson go through the program. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to the Bemidji Lumberjack Football program in his name.
