Shirley Sletten, 95, of Bemidji, MN, died Monday, October 23, 2023, at Colleen’s Caring Hands, Bemidji.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 30, 2023, at St. Philips Catholic Church, Bemidji, MN. Visitation will be from 4:00 –6:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 5:30 p.m., Sunday, October 29, 2023, and one hour prior to the Mass all at the church. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Bemidji.
Shirley Maria Gagnon was born in Bemidji, MN on June 29, 1928, the daughter of Wilfred T. Gagnon and Rose (Carpenter) Gagnon. She attended St. Philips School and Bemidji High School. Shirley worked for Wright’s Café, Red Cap Dairy Store and M.P.I. She married Olaf Sletten on October 22, 1954, in St. Philips Catholic Church, Bemidji. After her retirement she volunteered at St. Philip’s Clothing Depot for 14 years and Senior Center in Bemidji for 19 years. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and making craft items. Shirley was a lifetime member of St. Philip’s Church and a member of the Senior Center.
Shirley is survived by her two daughters, Vicky (Richard) Tobey and Karen Mattson; sister, Patricia (Arthur) Swanson; grandchildren, T.J. (Christy) Hammerstrom, Lisa Mattson, Ryan Mattson, and Stephen (Ashley) Mattson; step-grandchildren, Tammi (Phil) Hofmeister, Darren Tobey and Jolene (Steve) Montgomery; great-grandchildren, Leif & Sage Dixon; step-great-grandchildren, Tori Ridlon, Hailee Hofmeister, Tyler Montgomery and Shayla Montgomery and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Olaf Sletten; son, Timothy Richard Sletten; siblings, Ida (Ed) Kalitowski, Salina (Orlyn) Stay, Irene (Wayne) Lish, Gloria Gagnon, Iris (Gene) Smith, Lois (George) South- Shirley’s twin, William Gagnon, Eugene Gagnon, and Alfred Gagnon.
The family wishes to express a special thanks to Father Bill, Father John, Dr. Wheeler, Colleen’s Caring Hands and wonderful staff, all the medical caregivers for the wonderful care that they gave Shirley and Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home (Arden).
