Peggy Lu (Phelps) Olson passed away Saturday April 16th at Havenwood Care Center in Bemidji.
Peggy had requested no funeral or memorial services in her prearrangements with Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home of Bemidji. Her friends and family respect her wishes and will celebrate her life by sharing memories of her.
Peggy was born November 4th, 1933, to Murray and Golda Phelps. She and her sister, Muriel, were raised by their grandmother, Myrtle (Gram) Ebinger.
Peggy was born and raised in Bemidji. She worked at the Highway Host in the early 60’s where she met and waited on Minnesota Vikings players during their training camps in Bemidji. She would later become an avid Vikings Fan.
On May 25th, 1966, she married and combined families with Donald Olson of Bemidji where they lived together until his passing in 2008.
Peggy worked many years until her retirement at FW Woolworths store in downtown Bemidji – first at the lunch counter and later as a cashier. She was one of the “Woolworth 7” Who held a union strike in the winter 1977 for fair pay and better working conditions.
Peggy was an excellent cook and loved to entertain and have adventured with family and friends. She was the life of the party. Peggy often showed her love by discovering and making your favorite foods. She always made sure no one ever left hungry. She loved being a grandma.
Peggy loved her family deeply.
She is survived by her son Steve (Jane) Hastig, her step-children Diane Moore, Duane Olson and Dawne McElroy, her grandchildren Brooke Hastig and Jarrett Hastig, as well as many beloved step-grandchildren, and step-greatgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, grandmother, sister Mur, stepson Daryl and many other life-long friends and family.
In lieu of flowers or memorials to the family, simply leaving kind words and memories on her memorial page would be a wonderful way to honor her.
