Red was born in Templeton, Iowa on June 16, 1921 to Henry and Julianna (Julich) Brune. His family moved to the Bemidji area where he grew up on “Brunes Camp” family resort on Big Lake. Red served in WWII as a torpedo man in the Pacific Ocean and was honorably discharged in 1946. On June 19, 1956 he married Joan Kummer and they had two children, Peggy and Max. they resided and worked at their family resort “The Bay Resort” on Lake Plantagenet. In his younger years, Red worked as an independent finish carpenter and worked for Nasvik construction. He retired as a postal carrier in the downtown Bemidji area. Somehow, he could remember every person and their corresponding address throughout the city and the Nymore area. After retirement, he spent years doing the things he loved...spending time with family, working on his wood projects, gardening, fishing and camping. As he aged, he enjoyed his crossword puzzles, watching the birds in the yard, and playing cards, especially with his granddaughter and special friend Grace. He always enjoyed his afternoons with a couple of Busch Light beers while overlooking the lake. Some of his best days were when his friends stopped by to visit and share Happy Hour time along with his life stories.
Red is survived by his daughter, Peggy (Bob) Hirt and son, Max; granddaughter, Jessica (Brian) Hansen and 2 great-grandchildren, Braken (15) and Tryg (9) and many nieces, nephews and close friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Hy Brune (1956) and Julianna (1996) brothers, Fred “Fritz” and Harry and sister, Marion Peterson along with their spouses and former wife, Joan (Kummer) Anywaush.
