Marshall Duane Froyd, lifelong resident of Bemidji, died on Friday August 27th, surrounded by family in his home.
Visitation will be at Olson Schwartz funeral home on Tuesday August 31st at 5pm-7pm. Funeral service will be held at the 7th Day Adventist church on Wednesday September 1st at 10:30am, with luncheon and burial following at Trinity Lutheran of Pony Lake.
Marshall Froyd was born to Russell Froyd and Donna Streed Froyd on May 15, 1950, in Bemidji. He attended Lincoln School and Bemidji High School, graduating in 1968. He attended Bemidji State University from 1968-70. He joined the army in 1971 during the Viet Nam war, completing basic training in Fort Lewis, Washington. He was transferred to Fort Monmouth, New Jersey for training as a Computer Technician. He married Joann Ness on July 3rd, 1971, at Pony Lake Church in Bemidji. He was transferred to Fort Shafter (Honolulu, Hawaii) and then to Schofield Barracks (Wahiawa, Hawaii) for the remainder of his time in the service. During his time in service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal & Sharpshooter Badge (Rifle). While in the military, he and Joann enjoyed visiting places in Asia while being stationed in Hawaii.
After the army, they returned to Bemidji. He completed his studies at BSU, graduating in 1976. During his college years he drove charter coach for Bemidji Bus Lines and moved furniture for Merchants Mayflower. In 1979 he began his career as a loan officer at First National Bank of Bemidji. He served as the President of the Northern Minnesota Bankers Association. He retired in 2013. In recent years he drove part time for Knife River and did cold weather vehicle testing. He and Joann raised three boys: Ryan, Sean, and Erik.
He served and volunteered with various causes. He mentored violin groups with the High School Orchestra, taught financial literacy classes, taught firearm safety courses, was appointed as the Airport Commissioner for the Bemidji Regional Airport, and was an elected official on the Liberty Township board. He was a member of Pony Lake church and filled several board positions through the years. He enjoyed traveling with Joann and his family, supporting his children’s activities, working in the woods, fishing, tinkering on tractors, and spending time with his family.
He is preceded in death by his father Merlin Froyd. He is survived by his wife, Joann, his sons Ryan (Erin), Sean (Gail), Erik, his grandsons Miller and Mason, his mother Donna, his sister Sheralyn (Mike, sons John and Paul), Jim (son Chris), and Don (Andrea, son Josh and Daughter Meghan).
