Lillian Mathews, age 105, died July 2, 2023, at Tamarack Court in Bemidji, MN.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 pm, on Friday July 7, 2023, at First Lutheran Church, Bemidji with Pastor Corey Fuhrman officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji, Minnesota
On April 3, 1918, Lars Larsen came in from the field to cut the umbilical cord on his 10th child. Lars and Anna named her Lillian. Lillian grew up in the rural Leonard area. Her elementary years she went to the Pond School and finished her high school years in Clearbrook. She went to Bemidji State University to get her two-year degree and later went on to finish her four year. She taught for one year at Pony Lake and 21 in Shevlin. After she retired, she took piano, violin, carving and painting lessons. She and her husband, Charles Mathews traveled all over the world. They went to every country in Europe except Scotland, across the Mediterranean, South America including Brazil. They also went on many ocean and riverboat cruises. Lillian volunteered at the Bemidji Senior Center and her church.
Lillian is survived by children; Gary (LeeAnn) Simenson, Beverly (Jim) Hiatt, Winnie Simenson, Bruce (Millicent) Simenson and Bradley (Janet) Simenson; nine grandchildren, Brandon (Bilinda) Hiatt, Russell Simenson, Brady (Lisette) Hiatt, Brett Simenson, Natalie (John) Nicholson, Kelli (Nicholas) Sovell, Ryan (Brooke) Simenson, Tiffany Simenson, Jeremy Simenson and Courtney Handel; 13 great grandchildren, James (Savannah) Hiatt, Jacob (Leah) Hiatt, Julia Hiatt, Arianna & Anastasia Hiatt, Stella & Mya Nicholson, Lillian, Cora & Mabel Sovell, David Simenson, Clarice Simenson, Cricket Simenson & Ty Oey; also very special friends, Madonna Welter and Linnea Swenson. She is preceded in death by husband, Charles Mathews and daughter Constance DeKrey and son-in-law, Donald DeKrey.
