Jim was born July 12, 1944 in Cass Lake, MN. He met his wife Betty (Masten) and was married in Cass Lake on October 9, 1965. Together they had 2 sons, Kurt and Keith, who provided them with 6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
He worked for various Tribal departments, such as manager of the Chewe and as a mechanic. He was self-employed the majority of his life, with logging and owning several local businesses (North Star, Jim’s Auto Repair and Armstrong Trucking). He and his wife enjoyed many activities together; stock car racing, snowmobiling, ricing, motorcycle riding and playing keno.
His latest enjoyment was driving his 18-wheeler over the road. Retirement was not for him, so he continued driving until his last breath. On January 12, 2020 he had a cardiac arrest while driving his truck through Colorado. It was a sudden attack, but he had time to slow down and pull over, so no accident occurred.
He enjoyed being around his family as well as his life-long friends. He was always there to help if he could, especially with mechanical problems. He will be greatly missed. Saying goodbye will be difficult for us all, but take comfort remembering the good memories and believing we will be together again in another life and time.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Armstrong; 2 sons, Kurt and Keith Armstrong; 6 grandchildren Kari, Kayla, Kelsey and Kasey Armstrong, Lindsey Matthews and Kurt Armstrong Jr.; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Mariam Longrie; brother, Walter Anderson and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Annie Sloan; 1 great-grandchild and uncles Wylie Armstrong, James Armstrong and Benny Armstrong.
