Greg Tweed, 74, of Bemidji, MN, passed away on September 25, 2024, at the Sanford Bemidji Medical Center after a long and courageous battle not only with Parkinson's disease, but after also undergoing treatment for cancer.
A celebration of life will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 14, 2025 at Calvary Lutheran Church, Bemidji.
Greg was born in Brainerd, MN on September 11, 1950, to Luther and Faye (Krumholz) Tweed. He attended elementary schools in Jenkins and Pequot Lakes and graduated from Pequot Lakes High School in 1968.
In November of 1970 Greg enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving his country with pride and dedication during the Vietnam War. Greg spent a total of four years active duty, spending 2 ½ years stationed in Okinawa, Japan. After completing active duty, he spent two more years in the Navy Reserves before attending college at Wadena Technical College, graduating in 1977 with a degree in Advanced Electronics.
Greg married Mai Thi Kaltsukis in 1977, and together had a son, Joshua, and a daughter, Mailyn. After their divorce in 1986, Greg married Julie Thompson on August 11, 1989, and along with Julie, added Kimberly and Andrea to his family.
Greg started his professional career with Control Data in May 1977, in Redwood Falls, MN and transferred to the Bemidji facility in 1979 where he worked as a Unit and Section Manager. Control Data evolved and expanded, eventually becoming Nortech Systems, where Greg continued to work his way up through the ranks. As Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer, Greg worked with a dedicated team of Nortech employees to further expand the business, adding facilities not only throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin, but also partnering with companies worldwide.
After leaving Nortech Systems, Greg and Julie established and ran their own successful business, Always There Staffing, in 2011, eventually operating in Bemidji, Hibbing, and Grand Rapids. Always There Staffing not only placed numerous employees in hundreds of businesses across northern Minnesota, but they also contracted with eight counties to provide watercraft inspectors to help keep invasive species out of Minnesota lakes, which was important to Greg as he was an avid fisherman.
Greg fished in many area lakes whenever he got the chance, both in winter and summer. For over 20 years he also made annual trips to Sunset Point Cabins in Minaki, Ontario, Canada, bringing along many different friends and family members to share in the adventures he had up there. Being the serious fisherman he was, he was always willing to help others by offering tips and advice on how to catch the big walleyes, even if it was unsolicited.
While telling Greg’s story, it wouldn’t be complete without mentioning his love of animals, especially his dogs. If you knew Greg at all, you probably knew Abby and Sheba, his constant companions. He also loved watching the neighborhood wildlife, and the deer and geese knew they had a safe haven in Greg’s yard.
Greg is survived by his wife Julie, his children Joshua Tweed, Ramsey, MN; Mailyn (Tweed) Williams, Anchorage, AK; Kimberly (Thompson) Fletcher and her husband, Jason, Manhattan, KS; and Andrea (Thompson) Beck and her husband Karl, Laporte, MN; his grandchildren Owen, son of Josh; Simone, daughter of Mailyn; Koston, Alexandra, Elizabeth, and Scarlett, children of Kim and Jason; and William and Grace, children of Andrea and Karl; sisters Vicki (John) Palmer, Breezy Point, MN; Kimberly (Jon) Anderson, Bloomington, MN; and Joan Gerrard, Ridgefield, WA; and a brother, Tim, Breezy Point, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Faye Tweed, and his infant brother, Michael.
