Geraldine "Gerry" Emily (Smith) Young

In loving memory of Geraldine (Gerry) Emily Young. 

Geraldine Emily Young passed away on December 26th, 2025 at Essentia Health in Fosston, MN.

Gerry’s Memorial Service will be at 2:00 on Friday, June 26th at Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home in Bemidji.  Visitation will begin at 1:00.

Gerry was born October 5th, 1936 to Elbert and Mable Smith in Bagley, MN. She grew up on the family farm in Bagley along with her brother Milo and sister Mavis.  Gerry attended and graduated High School in Bagley.  In 1955, Gerry married Dwayne Young and they had 4 children together while living in Solway, MN.  Her daughter Vickie was her first born, followed by her sons Kevin, Kyle and Kory.

Gerry was a stay-at-home Mom. She enjoyed bowling, curling and helping with the ice rink in their back yard in Solway.  In 1970, Gerry and her family moved to Bemidji.

Gerry was a wonderful Mother and never had enough time with her kids. She loved her family and friends and relished the time spent with them.  She was an amazing cook and enjoyed making her family’s favorite deserts.

Gerry and Dwayne’s marriage ended in divorce and many years later Gerry met her special friend, Jim Fultz.  We came to know how adventurous she was riding with Jim in their side by side. She enjoyed listening to Jim’s music at the Senior Center and other local establishments while wearing her Cowgirl hat and boots.  Gerry loved Jim dearly and he loved and cared for her till the end.

Mom loved our family gatherings, dinners, holidays, birthdays, BBQ’s.  Her smile will be with us always and her soul has touched us forever.  We will miss her courage, strength, wit, and laughter and mostly, her love.

Gerry is survived by her special friend and her love, Jim Fultz, her sons Kevin Young, Kyle (Stacey Ahcan) Young, Kory (Erica Lyseng) Young: her grandchildren Eran (Marcie) Young, Brandy (Jesse) Liedman, Kody (Cindy) Young, Karrie Young, Steven (Abby) Hartje, Cameron Young, Mallory Young, and numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by her parents Elbert & Mable Smith, sister Mavis Berentsen, brother Milo Smith, sister-in-law Betty Smith, daughter Vickie Nord and niece Dorinda Ward.

The family would like to thank all the staff at Essentia Health Hospital in Fosston.
