Ike was born October 17, 1928 in Federal Dam, MN to George and Vesta (Smith) Patton. He grew up in Federal Dam and graduated from Boy River High School in 1948. Ike worked construction in Federal Dam for a number of years before moving to Bemidji in 1956. Over the years, Ike had a variety of jobs including painter, driver for the Johnson Baking Co. and Tom Lloyd Mobil Oil. He worked for Omeara’s Clothing and then for the First National Bank of Bemidji for eleven years doing maintenance and working in the mail room. Ike first retired in 1995 but soon went back to work for Spaulding Motors delivering cars. Ike’s last job was at Brigid’s Pub, working maintenance three days a week, often starting his days at 5:00 a.m. Ike finally retired at age 88. He was proud that he was able to work and contribute for so much of his adult life.
Ike was a fixture in downtown Bemidji living above what is now the Brigid’s Pub building for nearly 50 years. He could be seen sweeping or shoveling the sidewalk in front of the building nearly every day or having breakfast and lunch at Raphael’s Bakery with friends.
Ike is survived by many lifelong friends, his sister Ann Batchelder of Bemidji, and a niece, Karen Batchelder of Philadelphia, PA. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Charles “Bud” Patton.
