Evelyn "Sally" (Morris) Steele

Evelyn “Sally” Steele, 78, died peacefully surrounded by her family Monday, April 25, 2022 at home in Bemidji.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Friday, April 29, 2022 at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji. Burial will be at Southarm Cemetery on June 19, 2022 at 2 p.m. with a luncheon to follow.

She was born to Walter and Lillie (Newell) Morris December 29, 1943 in Custer, SD. She moved to the Bemidji area as an infant. Sally was raised and educated in Bemidji and surrounding areas. On February 25, 1961, she married Howard Steele in Bemidji.  They had 5 girls. Sally worked for Beltrami Nursing Home, Cass County as a PCA and Advantage House. Sally was known for her valentine cookies that her and Howard did together for many years. They made at least 300 each year and hand delivered to friends and family. Sally made knitted slippers for many people. She spent countless hours knitting and crocheting. Sally enjoyed baking and cooking, vacations with her daughter and granddaughter, trips to the casino and holiday gatherings with her family and friends. February 2022 she made the milestone of 5 generations with the birth of her 1st great-great-granddaughter.

She is survived by her daughters, Cassandra Steele, Nancy Haggard, Peggy (Richard) Thayer and Leona (Toby Ruport) Steele; former sons-in-law, Steve Haggard and Gene Mondt; sisters, Ole Steele and Cindy (Bruce) Bauer; grandchildren, Nikki Steele, Amber (Daryl) Bohn, Jordan Thayer, Richell (Garrett) Thayer, Andrew Hansen and Ryan Watkins; great-grandchildren, Malakai Wilson, Devin Bohn, Damian Watkins, Darrion Bohn, Kayli Watkins and Trentin, Benny and Aydin Thayer; great-great-granddaughter, Aleida Jenkins Bohn; and special family friends, Ross Sandmeyer and residents of Advantage House; along with several nieces and nephews and many family pets.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard; infant daughter, Penny Kay Steele; sons-in-law, Kirk Eakins and Robert Hansen; brother-in-law, Harold Steele (Howard’s twin); siblings, Leaphie, Cedric, Tom, Rose and Bob; several family members and furbabies, Pumpkin, Bootsie and Lola.

Sally was loved and will be missed by many.
