Derek Lee Kringen was born on January 4, 1978, to Curt and Sue Kringen. He passed away on February 18th after a courageous battle with cancer, a fight he met with remarkable strength and grace.
Born and raised in Bemidji, Minnesota, Derek graduated from Bemidji High School and attended Bemidji State University. He grew up in a very close family where his cousins were his first best friends and holidays were celebrated in large gatherings full of laughter. The friendships he formed in high school grew into lifelong bonds. He had a gift for drawing in new friends who became part of his ever‑growing circle that meant so much to him.
In 2006, Derek married Anna Ford, and together they welcomed two beautiful children, Cora and Elijah. Becoming a father was the greatest joy of Derek’s life. He devoted himself wholeheartedly to his kids, finding his happiest moments in the woods teaching them to hunt, riding four-wheelers, sitting around a good bonfire, and sharing his love for the outdoors. Derek was passionate about sports, and nothing made him prouder than cheering on Cora and Eli. He loved music his whole life and sharing that love with his children became a meaningful bond between them. Derek made certain to teach and share his values and wisdom and the meaning of your word and your name. His face lit up whenever he spoke about his children; they were his pride, his purpose, and his greatest legacy.
For 15 years, Derek owned and operated Lazy Jacks, a business he poured his heart into. He expanded the space to include the Ralph Gracie American Legion Post #14 and hosted summer volleyball leagues, creating a community he was deeply proud of—and one that was equally proud of him.
Derek was known for his generosity, his kindness, and his unwavering positivity. He loved to laugh, had a talent for practical jokes, and his infectious giggle could brighten any room. He was the kind of person who made others feel welcome and valued.
Derek is survived by his parents, Curt and Sue Kringen; his sister Shelly (Lucas) Gulbranson and their daughter, Hannah (Niece); his former spouse, Anna Ford; and his beloved children, Cora and Elijah Kringen.
He is preceded in death by his infant brother, Eric Kringen.
