Dean Walk, 80, of Turtle River, MN died Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at his home.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 30, 2020 at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji with Pastor Linnea Papke-Larson officiating. Visitation will 5-7 p.m. Thursday, October 29, 2020 at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Turtle River.
Dean Edward Walk was the born January 22, 1940 in Worth County, IA to Edward and Ruth Walk, 5th of 9 children. He attended a one room schoolhouse through the 8th grade, then attended Albert Lea High School. He received his GED, and enlisted in the Navy. He entered the U.S. Navy September 12, 1957 and during his Naval Career he served as a Com Tech, on a Naval base in Guam. He joked that he was selected only because he could type. He was honorably discharged January 19, 1961. He married Patricia Thomas on April 8, 1961 and had 4 children (Mitchell, Martin, Christopher and Tracey). They divorced in 1972. Dean married Jane Thelen in Sioux Falls, SD on Dec 8, 1972, and had 1 child Nicholas Walk. Dean has held many interesting careers in life, bank manager, city clerk for Blackduck, council member for City of Turtle River, debt collector, courier for Loomis and peddled Roma pizzas before he went back to school in 1982 to get his LPN degree and then worked for North Country Regional Hospital now Sanford Bemidji Medical Center for 21 years until his retirement. Dean was an active outdoorsman who enjoyed deer/grouse hunting and fishing. As well as an accomplished gardener, as his many roses can attest, he enjoyed the country life, and was always accompanied with a faithful dog he had throughout his life. He was an avid reader of non-fiction and history books, and daily crossword puzzles. Grandpa Dean could always be counted on to have treats for his grandchildren whom he loved dearly. Dean always had stories and a good joke to share and delight his grandchildren with.
He is survived by his wife, Jane; children, Mitchell (Kathy) Walk, Tracey Wilson and Nicholas (Pamela) Walk. His sister Judy (Don) Schultz, brother in law Robert Guenther, numerous nieces and nephews. Grandchildren, Alicia (Rick) Walk, Kayla (Adam Schulte), Anthony (Courtney) Walk, Jennifer (Steven Fremling), Raymond Buss, Zachary (Whitney) Buss, Brooklynn, Sydney and Jareth Walk, Alexis (Chad Peterson), and Anthony Smith. And 13 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Edward W, and Ruth L Walk; children Martin Jon Walk and Christopher Allen Walk, sisters, Betty Guenther, Joy Bergstrom, brothers, Ronald Sr., David, Larry, Gary and Bruce Walk and son-in-law, Harold Wilson.
