David Scott Stomberg, 72, of Bemidji died on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at his home in Bemidji, MN.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at the Bemidji Seventh-day Adventist Church in Bemidji, MN with his son Elder Scott Stomberg officiating. A lunch (weather permitting) for family and friends will be held at Diamond Point Park in Bemidji, MN at 12:00 PM immediately following the service. Burial will be in Capernaum Lutheran Cemetery in Quiring Township, MN.
David was born on January 4, 1954, in Blackduck, MN, the son of Loren and Helen (Rubash) Stomberg. He attended first through twelfth grade in Kelliher, MN graduating from the Kelliher High School in 1972.
After graduating high school David farmed in Kelliher, MN. Then in 1978 he took a job at the Hearst Castle for the William Rondolph Hearst Estate in San Simeon, CA. In 1979 David started a new career with California Minnesota Honey Farms where he fell in love with beekeeping. For the majority of the next two decades, he spent his winters in Oakdale, California and his summers in Eagle Bend, MN either working for California Minnesota Honey Farms or operating his own beekeeping business.
David was one of several beekeepers featured in the May 1993 issue of National Geographic Magazine “US. Beekeepers: Hives for Hire” article. A picture of him from that article was republished as a National Geographic Magazine’s “Photo of the Day” on August 20, 2022.
During slow periods in the beekeeping industry David worked as a self-employed logger in various areas of northern Minnesota. In 2010 he started working for MDH Minnesota, located in Fosston, Minnesota, retiring in 2016. At this time in his life, he also lived next to his parents Loren and Helen Stomberg and assisted them during their retirement years.
David loved being outdoors and in nature. He enjoyed beekeeping, gardening, hunting, and fishing with his children, brothers, and his many nieces and nephews. He spent his retirement years doing what he loved, gardening and keeping bees, providing plants, produce, and honey for his friends and family. He was very close to his aunt and uncle Emily and Bill Schueller spending a lot of time with them and assisting them with their medical appointments or other needs.
David is survived by his brother Rod (Jodi) Stomberg of Warroad, MN, sister Sandra (Paul Klema) Robb of Roseau, MN; his children, Scott (Tabita) Stomberg of Conroe, TX, Stuart Stomberg of Mayer, AZ, Stephanie Stomberg of Pullman, MI, Zachary (Casey Detuncq) Stomberg of Plantersville, TX, Travis (Destiny) Stomberg of Conroe, TX), Devon Crist of Bemidji, MN, Gavin Stomberg of Bemidji, MN, and Tianna Stomberg of Bemidji, MN; 5 grandchildren, Erik (Mackenzie), David, Hendrik, Joseph, and Avery; 3 great-grandchildren, Malachi, Hadassah, and Zipporah.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Loren and Helen (Rubash) Stomberg; brother Daryl Stomberg; and sister-in-law, Nancy Stomberg.
