David MaGaurn Obituary

David MaGaurn, 66, of Bemidji, Minnesota entered into rest on February 22, 2022.

Memorial service 3:00 p.m., Thursday, March 3 at Bethel Lutheran Church, Bemidji, Minnesota with visitation one hour prior at church.

David was born to Elton & Marguerite (Olson) MaGaurn on June 3, 1955, in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. After his birth, David’s family was on the move around the country from Army base to Army base and spent some time in Germany as a young child. David’s father then retired from the Army and the family returned to Bemidji, Minnesota where David would reside for the remainder of his life.

After graduation from Bemidji High School, David followed his sister to the west coast for a brief time where he followed a passion for scuba diving acquiring a Master Diver Certificate. After returning to Bemidji, David went on to attend a vocational school in Wadena to study as an electrician. With a Master Electrician’s license, he opened his own electrical contractor shop in Bemidji. David went on to pursue many business ventures in the electrical trade, coin-operated laundromat and carwash business, government-leased buildings, and worked in real estate for some time. He was an entrepreneur at heart, with many irons in the fire always.

David was joined in marriage to Karen Peterka. They were blessed with two children, Carl and Monaya MaGaurn. David later became engaged to Laurie Wood where he would be afforded the opportunity to meet Laurie’s two children, Jaramie and Jaimie, watching them grow into adulthood. In David’s spare time he enjoyed activities outside of business and entrepreneurship. In the fall he would be deer hunting. He did not enjoy the actual act of killing of the animal, but thoroughly enjoyed the preparation and pursuit of the hunt. Rarely ever did he take an animal off his properties but enjoyed watching/studying the animals. Guests to his properties were always welcome to take the trophy animals which were afforded to many. The time spent with friends in the pursuit of the hunt on the land he cared for and prepared was so enjoyable to him. In the spring and summer, he was gardening and farming. Some would argue his yearly yield could compare to that of production farming. Some crops were over-successful in a sense as the harvest could never be consumed by his immediate family. He would always share the crops he reaped from his land with friends and the community. After the harvest, he would make his way around the community delivering produce. Being an opportunistic/entrepreneurial person, he would take this chance to pop into a business, sharing his produce with others and getting in a good visit. He was able to sell some of his produce, too. He also put on the fisherman hat, going on trips with friends to Canada on Lake Of the woods, Crow Lake, or Lac Seul.

David enjoyed spending time with grandchildren at his properties, often around planting or harvest season. He enjoyed music which was part of all activities with each of his properties having some type of system to play music for all to enjoy. David genuinely enjoyed working with and helping others. He was proud to be part of the Bemidji community and the value he brought to the community with his contributions as an entrepreneur. He will be missed by many, and his legacy will live on by his survivors.

He is survived by his son Carl (Ashley) MaGaurn, Grandchildren, Liam, Hudson and Reagan of Bemidji and his daughter Monaya MaGaurn of Bemidji, Fiancé Laurie Wood of Bemidji, Laurie’s Children Jamie Wood of Bemidji, Jaramie (Dalton Detwiler) Wood of Mound, Minnesota, and sister Connie Ouellette of Spring, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents Elton and Marguerite MaGaurn.
