Ronald Leroy Fitzgerald

Ronald Fitzgerald, 80, of Bemidji, MN died Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at his home.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 10, 2018 at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji with Pastor Kent Dudley officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Ronald Leroy Fitzgerald was born September 20, 1938 in Ft. Dodge, IA to Clarence and Oleta (Ghisham) Fitzgerald.  He grew up and graduated from Ft. Dodge High School in 1956 where he received the Schultz Trophy which is presented to the most outstanding student in both academics and athletics.  He met and then married Margie Berns in March of 1957.  Ron worked for Hormel Foods for 11 years in Ft. Dodge.  In 1970, they moved to Bemidji where Ron went to work for the Beltrami County Highway Department and would remain there until his retirement in 1999.  Ron enjoyed his retirement with fishing and his time spent in a houseboat and enjoying his camper on Lake of the Woods.  He also reluctantly enjoyed helping his wife and daughter-in-law Barb take entries to the local county fairs.

Ron is survived by his wife, Margie Fitzgerald of Bemidji; sons, Randy (Barb) Fitzgerald of Bemidji, Rick Fitzgerald of Ellijay, GA and Russ Fitzgerald of Bemidji; 4 grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Niemeyer of Ft. Dodge and Marilyn Birkholtz of Ft. Dodge; brother, Paul Halverson of Ft. Dodge; brothers-in-law,  Ron (Molly) Berns, Paul Reinholtz, Phil Reinholtz and Dave Ditsworth and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother, Hazel Fitzgerald.
