Richard “Dick” Dunphy passed away on July 9, 2018, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Dick was born July 23, 1928, in Minneapolis, son of Kenneth and Alpheld Dunphy. Raised and educated in Minneapolis. Enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1945, he served three years of duty in the Aleutian Islands, stationed on Unimak Island in Alaska as Officer in Charge. After serving, he continued his education at the University of Minnesota where he met Jeanne Fitzsimmons. After graduation they married August 20, 1950 in Brainerd, MN. They resided in the Minneapolis area and Nisswa until eventually moving to Bemidji where they purchased Plywood Minnesota “Floor to Ceiling Store”.
They enjoyed many travels here and abroad. Dick’s favorite pastime was fishing. He lived life to the fullest with outdoor activities year-round, both at Gull Lake in Nisswa and his Canada get away.
Dick is remembered for being a terrific dad, loving husband, loyal friend and inspiration to many, involved in Boy Scouts and always his kids’ interests.
Dick is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jeanne Dunphy; children - Jack, Mark (Linda), Mike and Jill; grandchildren – Ryan, Haley, Jordan, Kelsey and Zachary; great-grandchildren – Madalynn and Lilyan; brother, Robert Dunphy, and sister-in-law, Joan Steiger. Many nieces, nephews and relatives.
Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, August 10th, with Visitation at 10 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Bemidji.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorial to Sanford Cancer Center of Bemidji.
