Nancy Lee (Halstead) Mattfield

Nancy Lee Mattfield, 78, of Bemidji passed away in her home on March 11, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. 

Memorial Services will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 18, 2019 at Evangelical Covenant Church, Bemidji. A Time of Sharing will be 4-6 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 2019 at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Nancy was born in Fergus Falls to Harold and Vera Halstead.  She graduated from Fergus Falls Senior High School in 1958, and completed her degree from Macalester College in 1962.

After graduation, she became a caseworker for the Itasca County Welfare Department.  It is during this time that she met and married her husband, Dwayne Mattfield in 1964, in Grand Rapids. Upon moving to Bemidji, Nancy worked part-time with the Minnesota Department of Public Health and later for Beltrami County Social Services until retiring in 1990.

Nancy’s number-one goal was to share her faith and love for Jesus.  Years of living with Multiple Sclerosis led her to begin journaling as a means to leave a legacy for her family, especially her grandchildren.  Her mission was to be a listening ear to anyone needing her.  Throughout the MS and her later battle with cancer, Nancy’s strong faith and positive attitude was inspiring to all that knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Dewey; three children, Scott (Crystal), Stuart (Heidi), and Shane (Amy) Mattfield; eight grandchildren, Madison, Samantha, Nicholas, Emma, Isabelle, Wyatt, Cal, and Isaac; three sisters, Geneva (James)Velez, Verna (Robert) Norland, and Sharon (James)Wilkinson; and beloved sister-in-law, Peg Bibich. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Thomas Halstead.
