Melvin Tobey Jr., 88, of Bemidji, MN died Thursday, September 26, 2019 at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 28, 2019 at Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji with Pastor Dwight Warden officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Bemidji.
Melvin Louis Tobey Jr. was born July 19, 1931 in St. Louis, MO to Melvin and Frances (Ruzicka) Tobey Sr. in St. Louis, Missouri. He entered the US Navy during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged, he owned and operated the Nebish Tavern & Store during the mid 1960’s. Melvin then went into the trucking business where he operated Mel Tobey Trucking hauling grain and logs. He married Jean Swanstrom on August 27, 1967 in New Town, ND. He would also work in Alaska and for Thorson’s Inc. as a trucker.
He is survived by his daughters, Kathy (Darrel) Bahr, Kelly (Mark) Wilkinson, Karen (Ron) Waskul and Barb (Troy) Haluptzok; 8 Grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Nancy Savard; brothers, LeeRoy (Audrey) Tobey, Richard (Vicky) Tobey and Bruce (Cathy) Tobey; and special friend, Lucille Martin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Jean Tobey; sister, Donna; 3 brothers-in-law and 2 sisters-in-law.
