Kenneth David Schlichting

Kenneth David Schlichting, age 93, died May 21st in Venice, Florida.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 2, 2017 at St. Philip’s Catholic Church, Bemidji with Fr. Chuck Huck officiating. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Bemidji. Arrangements were entrusted to the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bemidji.

He was born April 4, 1924 in Royalton, Minnesota to Philip and Helen (Krystosek) Schlichting and was raised in Royalton. When he graduated from high school, he entered the U.S. Army. He served in the Asia-Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. After his discharge from the Army, he attended St. John's University and graduated in 1949. He married Dorraine Meyer in 1952. He was employed by the Social Security Administration for 33 years. He served in offices at Grand Forks, North Dakota; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Austin, Minnesota; and Chicago, Illinois. In 1972, he was appointed District Manager of the North Central Minnesota District in Bemidji. He served in that position until he retired. He was a member and past president of the Rotary Club. He was a member of St. Philip's Catholic Church and the American Legion. He served for five years on the North Country Hospital Board of Directors. He served as a volunteer at the food shelf. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorraine; brother, Gerald; sister, Adeline Nelson; 

He is survived by a son, James (Molly-Jo) of Springfield, Virginia, and a daughter, Nancy Wellan (Jeff) of Lakeville, Minnesota; five grandchildren (Gina, Andrew, Alexa, Sarah, and Amanda); and a special friend, Loretta McEnroe.

Memorials are preferred for the Sanford Home Care and Hospice or St. Philips School.
