Helen Mabel (Marks) Johnson

Helen Johnson, 96, of Bemidji, MN formerly of Solway, MN died Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at GoldPine Home, Bemidji.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at Solway Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeremiah Holst officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Solway Cemetery.

Helen Johnson was born Sept. 19, 1922, near Felton, Minn., to James Robert and Mabel (Haug) Marks and was the fourth of six children. She attended country school through the eighth grade, when she quit to help her parents on the farm. She also worked as a nanny, at the Solway store, at the Markham Hotel, and at a federal ammunitions plant in the Twin Cities before marrying Glen Johnson of rural Solway, Minn., on Feb. 22, 1947.

She and Glen operated a dairy farm in Lammers Township for more than 30 years until Glen’s retirement due to ill health. Helen enjoyed traveling with friends and family in the early years of her retirement. She also enjoyed fishing and maintaining a large vegetable garden.

Helen was confirmed and married in the Lutheran faith, and she and Glen were active in the Solway Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School, participated in circle and quilting, and helped serve church dinners. She enjoyed baking as well as crocheting afghans, baby blankets, and doll clothes as gifts.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant daughter, Judy; her five brothers and sisters and their spouses – Elizabeth (Charles) Sanders, Annie (Harold) Peterson, William (Lorraine and Lucille) Marks, Robert (Mary) Marks, and Irene (M. Edward) Bjelajac; and other family members. Helen is survived by her extended family, caring neighbors and church members, and the staff and families of Gold Pine Home, Bemidji.

Memorials will be directed to Solway Lutheran Church.
