Gregory Allan Smerud

Gregory Smerud, 61, of Bemidji, MN died Thursday, June 1, 2017 at his home.

Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji with Pastor Mike Naylor officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Bemidji.

Gregory Allan Smerud was born November 29, 1955 in Bemidji, MN. He grew up in Nymore and attended Lincoln Elementary School. At a very young age, Greg was the consummate hard worker always finding jobs for him and this would carry on throughout his life. He enlisted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.  The bond with his fellow infantrymen was quite strong and he would make every effort to reacquaint with his Army buddies whenever he could. When Greg came back from the service he went to work in construction siding homes. He owned and operated Smerud Siding and would continue that until just the last few years when he began struggling with health issues. Greg enjoyed taking road trips with family and friends.  Fishing and gardening along with planting trees and shrubs were another love of his.  Greg even planted and cultivated his own grapevines which he used to make his own wine.

He is survived his wife, Bonnie Smerud of Bemidji; sons, Allan Smerud and Mark Smerud both of Bemidji; siblings, Mike (Zita) Smerud of Wilkinson, Jodie (Mike) Wagner of International Falls and Kim (Jim) Westrum of Bemidji and 3 grandsons, Brayden, Tristan and Talon Smerud and his in-laws Clyde & Betty Stagner.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dode & Rich Carter and son, Zachary.
