Robert Henry Melhorn

Robert Melhorn, 86, of Bemidji, MN died Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at Tamarack Court.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 15, 2017 at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji with Megan Tee officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Friday, April 14, 2017 at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Bemidji, MN.

Robert Henry Melhorn was born July 23, 1930 in Bemidji, MN to Henry and Altha (Hanner) Melhorn. He attended Northern School until the 8th grade and then worked on the family farm until he was drafted in to the Army in February 1952. He was stationed at Fort Belvoir, VA. Robert honorably discharged February 2, 1954 and came back to Bemidji and continued working the family farm in between working in the Dakota’s during harvest times. He met Julann Pedersen in Crookston in 1955. They were married February 11, 1956. They moved to Duluth where he worked for the DM&IR Duluth-Mesabi Railroad. In 1958 they moved back to Bemidji to help on his parents farm and working his own farm raising pigs, beef cattle, chickens, working his own fields of alfalfa and oats. He also was working for Wrights Oil during this time hauling heating oil and potatoes. He then took a job with the City of Bemidji in the street department in May 1965 working heavy equipment, mainly road grader until he retired in September 1992. Robert took a year or so off but then took on a part time job for Sparky’s Construction, running road grader once again until he officially retired at the age of 75. He loved to fish, garden, farming, carpentry, and elaborate storytelling, would make up his own words and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Julann Melhorn of Bemidji; sons, Jeff (Patti) Melhorn of Hibbing and Terry (Jane) Melhorn of Bemidji; daughters, Lori (Jeff) Nei of Bemidji and Nancy (Brian) Lofgren of Bemidji; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; sister, Elsie Stauty of Duluth and brother, Richard (Josie) Melhorn of Cushing.

He was preceded in death by his parents and younger sister, Darlene.
