Donald Oliver “Pail” Hill, 84, of Bemidji, MN died Friday, June 2, 2017 at Colleen’s Caring Hands, Bemidji with his loving family by his side.
Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 10, 2017 at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji with Pastor Genelle Netland officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Friday, June 9, 2017 at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji.
Donald was born March 13, 1933 to William and Myrtle (Carlson) Hill. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He served in the military. When Donald returned from the military, he worked at the box factory. He carried his lunch in a pail and earned the nickname “Pail” that he carried throughout his lifetime. He met Ardis Westrum in 1957 and later married. They lived in Bemidji where they owned and operated Heidi’s Café. Donald worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad until his retirement. He was an active member of the American Legion, Forty and Eight and Shriners. He was also a charter member of the Eagles. For many years, Donald placed flags on the graves to honor the veterans. He enjoyed spending time with his many friends.
He is survived by son, Virgil Johnson; daughters, Jackie (Tim) Welch, Wanda (John) Baumgartner and Colleen (Roger) Kjos; special friend, Mary Jane Johnson; brother, LeRoy (Lois) Hill; sister, Gloria (Bud) Woodard; sister-in-law, Irma Hill; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ardis; daughter, Patty Tischman; brother, Russel Hill and sister, Delores Stokes.
