Ceremony Options

Our training and experience have prepared us to help, to reassure, and to understand when a family faces the loss of a loved one. We are here to replace confusion with calm, doubts with certainty, and questions with answers. Here, one finds a quiet gentleness in an atmosphere of dignity, efficiency, and trust. We believe your service choice is a personal decision. At Olson-Schwartz, we explain the options available, then allow you to make your own decisions.

Traditional Service

A traditional service for burial, entombment or cremation, is usually the service of choice. At Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home we believe in the elements of the traditional funeral, because they provide a solid base to begin the work of grief resolution for family and friends.
The traditional funeral service may be the following:

• Transfer of the deceased to the funeral home
• Embalming
• Dressing, cosmetology and other care of the deceased
• Professional support and administrative staff assistance
• Use of visitation rooms
• General use of the facilities for the service and arrangements
• Funeral service
• Use of funeral coach
• Utility car
• Register book
• Acknowledgment cards
• Memorial folders or prayer cards

The traditional service is a meaningful expression for the family, and it gives friends and associates an opportunity to offer their tributes in the way of flowers or memorials to churches or organizations.

Generally, a member of the clergy or other person chosen by the family conducts a service of remembrance. We encourage the active participation of the family in helping plan this part of the service. Many times family members take part by giving a reading, singing or assisting the clergy. If the ceremony is held in a church, there is no additional charge. Nor is there an additional charge for arranging and conducting fraternal services.

In addition, a casket, urn (if cremated), and a burial container will be selected to use for services and placement at its final resting location

Service Options

When arranging a funeral service, we at Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home believe you should be able to choose the type of service that you find most meaningful. That's why our list of services includes many options.

Whether you choose burial or choose cremation for the final disposition, a funeral service is appropriate, and recommended. Survivors still need the time and setting to grieve. The service options would include traditional funeral services with a visitation, funeral service; to a memorial service in conjunction with burial or cremation with no casket present, to simple immediate burial or cremation with no services.

When using cremation, a loved one's ashes may be placed in an urn and taken to a final resting place such as a family plot, urn garden, columbarium or a family member's home. Sometimes cremated remains are divided into several urns. This option works well when loved ones are spread out across the country.

Others choose to have their ashes scattered in a special cemetery garden or over land or water (where permitted by law). In this case, a portion of the cremated remains is usually kept in a keepsake urn as a remembrance.

Additional Services

Private Identity Viewing, A private identity viewing will be requested by the funeral home when a family declines to include a reviewal in the service arrangements and the death occured "unattended". A family representative or a friend desiganted by the family will be asked to view a person's body for the purpose of confirming the identity. There is no additional fee charged for this service as it is a sadfegaurd to both the family and the funeral home to prevent mistaken identity. This viewing is done during regular office hours and is limited to a maximum of three people.

A private viewing can be arranged whether the body is embalmed or not. If not embalmed, the viewing would be limited to immediate family members ONLY. The customary fees will be charged for a private family viewing if scheduled outside regular office hours.

Our service offerings include coordinating the transfer of a human remains from Bemidji to a distant location or from a distant location to Bemidji. This will be accomplished using the most economical means unless instructed to do otherwise. If a transfer is to exceed 350 miles, we will utilize a commercial airline originating at or terminating at the major airport in Grand Forks, ND, Fargo, ND or Minneapolis, MN.

Embalming Policy

Although law does not require embalming, embalming may be necessary if you select certain funeral arrangements, such as a funeral with a viewing. If you do not want embalming, you have the right to choose an arrangement, which does not require you to pay for it, such as immediate cremation or immediate burial.

If you choose not to allow embalming, we will attempt to complete arrangements for final disposition within 24 hours. If these arrangements take longer than 24 hours but less than 72 hours, we will utilize a mortuary refrigerator to shelter the remains until the transfer to the location of final disposition is initiated. If necessary arrangements take longer than 72 hours, embalming will be performed to comply with State of Minnesota laws.
